Cedarwood: The Celestial tree

Ceadrwood is one of important essential oil used in perfumery. Its belong to woody family.



There are different version of Cedarwood oils present in Perfumer’s pallets and they are named as per there origin:-

  1. Cedarwood Himalyan

  2. Cedarwood Texus

  3. Cedarwood Virginia

  4. Ceadrwood Atlas

  5. Cedarwood China

  6. Cedarwood Lebanon


  • Surprisingly; Cedrwood Virginia EO, Cedarwood Texus EO, Cedarwood china and Cedrwood Atlas are actually not belong to Cedrus family i.e. Cedarwood family.

  • Cedarwood Viginia and Cedarwood Texus are belong to Juniperus family; Juniper Tree

  • Cedrwood Atlas (Alaska) and Cedarwood China belong to Cypress family; Cypress Tree.


The False cedrawood name has given to them due to presence of Cedrol constituent in the oil.

Cedrol is sesquiterpene alcohol, which itself have faint woody smoky note in it.

It makes up about 19% of cedarwood oil Texas and 15.8% of cedarwood oil Virginia.







There are infinite numbers of world famous fragrances use cedarwood as important Skelton of Perfume.

Ceadrwood Himalyan


Cedarwood Himalyan is called Daivadaru in Sanskrit, Here Daiva means God and Daru means tree. In Hindu mythology the Himalayas is where the gods reside. Since the trees grow in the abode of gods it is called Daivadaru

A Sanskrit Shloka explains the various uses of this celestial tree



The verse makes it clear that cedarwood Essential oil has a number of medicinal properties It has important role in Indian Ayurveda, it has antifungal, antiseptic, Diuretic, antibacterial, antioxidant, pain killing and Sedative property.
