Parijaat | Harsingar | Shefali

Parijaat is also know as Harsingar in Hindi, Shefali in Bengali and its botanical name is Nycantanthes Arbortristis which means ‘night flowering’ ‘the tree of sorrow’. As in the early morning when it has dropped it’s flowers, the tree appears to look sad.


Although most of flowers like Jasmine, Rose, Lily, Marigold are offered to God plucked directly from plant, yet Parijat is considered as the only flower that can be picked from ground and offered to God.


The Parijaat tree is believed to be one of the products that surfaced as a result of the ‘Samudramanthana’.

Rabindranath Tagore in his poem has mentioned about Parijat flowers and it’s importance in Durga Puja.
